Equifax
was formerly known as the Retail Credit Company. It is an organization
widely used by insurers to obtain information on applicants for
underwriting purposes and sometimes on claims. Their reports are
known as Retail Credit Reports.

Equifax enables and secures global commerce through its information
management, consumer credit, marketing services, business information,
authentication and e-commerce business
How does Equifax get information? Mainly from the companies that
have granted you credit in the past, and those with whom you have
open accounts.
Each creditor
reports the status of your account to us according to your payment
history. Other sources are banks, retailers, collection agencies
and public records from courthouses.
